Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens is a relative newcomer on the scene, having opened in May 2011.

It is part of Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall Campus and was set up as an educational training facility for the college’s Animal Care students, as well as becoming a tourist attraction on weekends and school holidays.

The zoo now boasts over 130 species of animals, reptiles and birds including alpacas, capybara and emus, and has links with various partners such as the Wildlife Trusts and Red Squirrels Northern England. It prides itself on offering enclosures that replicate all of the species’ natural habitats.
