Swallow Nest Box

These amazing birds feed on airborne insects so they have to follow the warm weather southwards every autumn. Swallows head for the southern tip of Africa for the winter. They make the return journey every spring arriving in April. When they arrive, their first priority is to find a nest site but, sadly, this is becoming harder as old buildings are demolished or repaired, farm buildings are secured or converted and some established nests are even deliberately removed in 'tidy-up' operations.

Tawny Owls, Stock Doves and Jackdaws naturally nest in dark cavities in trees or buildings. Such sites are often in short supply so this nest box can be a valuable way of helping these species. The nest box should be sited at least 3m above the ground, have a clear flight path to the entrance and be in an area that is normally free of human activity, although Tawny Owls and Jackdaws may use busier sites if the box is placed above 5m. Tawny Owl chicks will leave the nest some time before they are able to fly, so it is important that they have access to branches with cover to hide in during the day. An ivy covered tree is ideal.

Little Owls are a naturalised species that can be found throughout England, Wales and the Scottish Borders. The data available suggest that Little Owls have suffered a rapid decline in numbers since the 1980s, probably as a result of changes in habitat including loss of nest sites.
