The Cliff Grazing Goats of Bournemouth

Discover Animals’ videographer Geoff Moore visits Bournemouth to meet the cliff grazing goats, which were introduced into the area a decade ago to help manage the vegetation on steep cliffs.

Poole Bay Cliffs are an important SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the goats here are part of a crucial environmental grazing project set up around two and a half years ago.

The goats have nine grazing pens, managed by a grazier, and browse the gorse, allowing more light into the ground and a wider range of plant species to grow.

Many have come from the Great Orme – these are cashmere goats (white and fluffy), which were becoming overpopulated in Wales and were successfully moved to Bournemouth to help with the project.

Now the goats are a tourist attraction in their own right, with many visitors coming to catch a glimpse of these amazing animals perching on the East Cliff.
