Drusillas Park near Alfriston in East Sussex is a family-run business, founded in 1922 when the late Captain Ann bought a derelict farm and 20 acres of land and opened a tea room, named after his first wife, Drusilla, adding attractions and animals to help boost trade. It remained in the Ann family until 1997 when current owners Laurence and Christine Smith acquired the attraction.
Over 100 different animal species live in naturalistic environments including meerkats, penguins, otters, beavers, gibbons and a range of monkeys.
As one of the earliest zoos to open in the UK, many of the animals are involved in breeding programmes, often monitored by studbook keepers, to ensure future species survival.
