Visitors can enjoy a spooky half term this Halloween at Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm in Warwickshire from 22nd – 30th October with plenty of scary offerings, creepy crawlies and pumpkins! Visitors can discover an assortment of spiders, poison dart frogs, medicinal leeches, axolotl and slithering snakes in Minibeast Metropolis.
The Butterfly Farm has also welcomed several new inhabitants to join its eclectic collection. These include a Giant Flower Beetle, Australian Prickly Stick Insects and Goliath Stick Insects. The Giant Flower Beetle is native to the tropical regions of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like many Beetles they spend most of their time in the soil as grubs eating rotting leaves and fruits. Males are slightly bigger than females and have horns on their heads. The Beetles come in a variety of colours, including green, orange and blue and have wings so are capable of flying.
The Goliath Stick Insect is native to Western Australia and Tasmania and likes to eat Eucalyptus leaves and Acacia trees. They can grow to be 25cms long. If threatened, they will deter predators by revealing their bright pink underwings. The Giant Prickly Stick Insect (above) is native to Eastern Australia and feeds on eucalyptus in the wild but is happy to eat bramble in the UK. When threatened, they curl their abdomen to mimic a Scorpion but are completely harmless.
Visitors can also enjoy Meet the Mini-Beast Handling Sessions, Butterfly Lifecycle, Pupae Preparation, Beetle and Snake Demonstrations held daily at 11:00am in the Discovery Zone.
On 29th & 30th October, visitors are encouraged to join the team for some Halloween fun and dress up as their favourite Halloween character.
