Capel Manor College and Gardens is thrilled to be able to announce a very exciting addition to its ever expanding animal collection, a troop of common marmoset monkeys!
‘Rattler’, ‘Bassett’ and ‘Red’ are currently settling into their brand new, purpose-built enclosure next to the London Animal Management Centre, part of the Princess Royal College of Animal Management and Saddlery at Capel’s Enfield Centre.
The marmosets have been rescued from mistreatment by Monkey World in Dorset. Monkey World works with governments around the world assisting in the rescue of primates, but here in the UK there is also a massive problem with primates in the illegal pet trade.
Monkey World gave Capel’s facilities a full inspection and were more than happy with the marmoset’s new home.
The marmosets join Capel’s growing animal collection, at last count there were more than 260 animals, birds, reptiles and insects. The collection is looked after by the college’s students, as part of the animal care and management courses available.
Malcolm Goodwin, Deputy Principal, said, “The arrival of the marmosets is fantastic news for Capel Manor’s visitors and students alike. The marmosets will join the other exotic collections of animal including meerkats, bearded dragons and South American maras in the zoological gardens at Capel’s fabulous north London campus in Enfield, which includes 34 acres of gardens that are packed with wonderful displays of flowers and design ideas.
“The marmosets will be on display for the public and also used as a teaching aid to educate the students in managing zoos, animal husbandry and animal behaviour.
“Capel Manor has a unique approach to teaching students to the highest levels (including its new Foundation Degree programmes) as students gain masses of experience with the animals. This means students leave with the right practical experience and skills to make them ready for employment or further study.
“These new monkeys, as well as other new animals that have been arriving at the college, are all really well looked after by the students and play a vital role in the students’ personal and professional development.”
