In this short film, Discover Animals’ Geoff Moore visits Weymouth to meet Melanie Llewellyn of West Hill Donkeys. She talks about how she took over running children’s donkey rides on Weymouth beach, and has grown her herd to include donkeys that have emotional and behavioural needs in order to show them love and care, and how the welfare of the animals is her absolute priority.
Geoff visited when the 30 donkeys (16 beach donkeys and 14 other supported donkeys) were due a check-up from their veterinary physiotherapist, Anita Miles, and she discusses how her initial reservations about the conditions working donkeys have been known to have endured in the past were completely swept away when she realised the importance placed on their health and happiness by Mel.
A farrier comes every two weeks to trim the donkeys’ hooves, and they also have a vet, saddler and dentist, all designed to ensure the wellbeing of these gentle, sociable souls.
