Alladale – a new wildlife vision for the Scottish Highlands

Discover Animals’ videographer Geoff Moore travels to Alladale Wilderness Reserve in Scotland to meet Paul Lister, and talks to him about his vision for the site, including his desire to re-introduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands as well as other projects such as releasing red squirrels back into the wild.

There are also plans to introduce a schools programme to encourage young people to understand more about rewilding, as well as providing a focus on wellness. This is all part of a move away from the Victorian-style way of running a Scottish reserve for shooting and hunting, becoming more inclusive and wildlife focused, with opportunities for the rural community to become involved in hospitality.

Scottish wildcats may be next to be introduced to Alladale

Paul is keen to be one of the next venues to release wildcats back into the Scottish landscape, and to give visitors to Alladale the opportunity for the face-to-face encounters with wildlife that will encourage more engagement in saving endangered species.

Beautiful Alladale

A million trees have been planted on the Alladale Wilderness Reserve as part of Paul’s rewilding scheme and he hopes that all the efforts on the site will entice visitors to the area to learn how they can help mitigate against the climate crisis and fall in love with the Scottish Highlands.

The Book of Wilding: A Practical Guide to Rewilding, Big and Small

The enormity of climate change and biodiversity loss can leave us feeling overwhelmed. How can an individual ever make a difference? Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell know firsthand how spectacularly nature can bounce back if you give it the chance. And what comes is not just wildlife in super-abundance, but solutions to the other environmental crises we face. The Book of Wilding is a handbook for how we can all help restore nature. It is ambitious, visionary and pragmatic. The book has grown out of Isabella and Charlie’s mission to help rewild Britain, Europe and the rest of the world by sharing knowledge from their pioneering project at Knepp in Sussex.
