Edinburgh Zoo is owned by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which was founded in 1909, with the zoo opening in 1913. Set in 82 acres, over 1,000 rare and endangered animals are looked after here.
One of Europe’s leading centres of conservation, education and research, in 2009, the zoo became the official Secretariat for the UK National Committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The attraction is home to two giant pandas, the only animals of their kind in the UK and one of only three pairs in Europe, which form part of a project aiming to re-introduce the giant panda to the wild.
