In Kent, Port Lympne Reserve is popular with visitors, and is run by the Aspinall Foundation along with Howletts Wild Animal Park.
John Aspinall purchased Port Lympne in 1973 to support his growing animal collection, with it opening to the public in 1976. Aspinall ultimately believed that animals belonged in the wild and endeavoured to return them to safe areas where possible.
A reserve in the Congo was established in 1987 to protect the critically endangered lowland gorilla and many other projects have been established worldwide since then. The main spheres of conservation activity include captive breeding, education and the rehabilitation of confiscated wild animals.
Port Lympne Reserve is set in over 600 acres and offers a safari truck ride through an ‘African Experience’ where over 200 animals roam including giraffe and zebra. There are over 700 animals in total including the largest herd of black rhino in the UK.
