On his recent visit to Gibraltar, Discover Animals’ videographer Geoff Moore spent time at the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park, one of the smallest members of BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums).
In this short film, he speaks to Jessica Leaper, Wildlife Park Manager, about how the park was first set up to house a selection of animals that were found on ships passing through the Straight of Gibraltar – some illegally trafficked and some destined for animal testing.
Now the animals also include exotic pets brought in from members of the public who can no longer look after them. The park has a large group of African grey parrots that have been kept as pets at home in solitary conditions when they are naturally very sociable creatures, which they are working to rehabilitate.
The ring-tailed and brown lemurs are a highlight of the park who mingle with visitors and help teach them about conservation in their native home of Madagascar, along with a population of parakeets.
