Q&A with Axel Scheffler

(questions from Discover Animals junior reviewers!)

Bea (10): ‘Who is the cat on the cover of the new calendar? Is he based on a real cat, and if so, what’s his name?’

No, this cat is not based on a real cat. In fact, our cats are black. But the chickens are real and their names are Polly, Odette and Ginny! If you look closely, you’ll see that the cat is, of course, a little too big on the drawing.

Kitty (8): ‘How old were you when you decided you were going to be an illustrator – and has drawing ever got you into trouble?’

I was in my late twenties, after I went to art school, when I started illustrating. Drawing hasn’t got me into trouble, no.  Well, not so far…

Herbie (6): ‘How did you decide what the Gruffalo was going to look like and what inspired you?’

To be honest, the Gruffalo had already been described partly in Julia Donaldson’s text, so I knew from the start that he would have to have orange eyes and knobbly knees and so on… but I also thought of medieval depictions of monsters while I was creating the finished article.
