Drayton Manor Zoo in Staffordshire has recently welcomed a handful of adorable new arrivals to its ever-growing furry family.
Two baby lynx cubs, Lars and Odin, were born in May and are settling right into their new home with mum and dad, Roots and Den-ene. The cubs are Northern lynx and will grow to be the biggest of the lynx species. Although their pelt is soft and fluffy at the moment, when they reach adulthood, it will develop into an extremely thick fur coat that helps these beautiful cats stay warm in even the harshest of environments.
However, Lars and Odin are not the only new additions at Drayton Manor Zoo; Tia and Tara, two female fishing cats were also welcomed with great enthusiasm in July. Fishing cats are native to vegetated areas in south east Asia. They are good swimmers and tend to use their short flattened tail as an udder, helping control their direction in water.
Christmas has come early for the reindeers at Drayton Manor Zoo too, as Phoenix, the newest addition to the herd has arrived. Likewise with Lynx, reindeer use their thick fur to keep warm in their natural Arctic environment.
Joyce Roberts, Zoo Manager, said: “It is always exciting when our animals breed and we get to welcome some new additions to our family. Lars and Odin, Tia, Tara and Phoenix have all settled in so well and that is down to the hard working, passionate team we have at the zoo, who ensure every single one of our animals’ needs are tended to. All five animals are already proving to be a hit with visitors and we know that Phoenix will really shine at this year’s Magical Christmas!”
