Our latest Book on the Bird Table is Wilder Journeys: True Stories of Nature, Adventure and Connection, edited by Laurie King and Miriam Lancewood.
Published by Watkins, the book taps into the growing need to reconnect with nature and become more at one with the land and planet we are all a part of.
The collection features international true life stories and poems from adventurers, nature lovers and nomads. Driven by dissatisfaction with their environments, the authors featured here have chosen to break free from the shackles of society and go on extreme journeys to connect to the essence of their animal nature.

The diverse contributors include American explorer Angela Maxwell, who describes her walk around the world, covering more than 20,000 miles across 14 countries, British wildlife cameraman and presenter Hamza Yassin on the trials and tribulations of filming on a remote peninsular and the insights that gave him into life in the wild, David Malana, creator and co-founder of Color the Water, a California-based anti-racist surf community for all Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), on how joyful practices in nature can help heal racial trauma, and Roz Savage, who holds four Guinness World Records for ocean rowing and uses her platform to raise awareness of our ecological crises, giving insight into what it meant to be alone in a vast ocean landscape.
The book includes a foreword from explorer Belinda Kirk and the stories are interspersed with work from leading poets, including Lemn Sissay, Fatimah Asghar, Selina Tusitala Marsh and Camille Dungy; read with an open heart for inspiration on how the wild can heal your soul and boost your sense of belonging within nature.Â
As Laurie King writes in The Nightingales in Concert © 2023:
I feel a stirring inside,
the will to create a life where the birds are my alarm clock,
where the ecosystem is my network,
and where my brain is the only hard drive.
