‘Champion a Tiny Forest Tree’ this Christmas

Nature organisation Earthwatch is highlighting its ‘Champion a Tiny Forest Tree’ campaign this Christmas as an alternative gifting option.

Whether your favourite tree is an Oak, Hazel, Rowan, Silver Birch, Hawthorn or Elm, for £18 you can pick the species you would like to sponsor in one of over 200 Tiny Forests across the UK. This means you can choose a location which is meaningful to the recipient and sponsor as many trees as you like.

A personalised gift certificate will be created and the recipient will be able to watch the growth of the forest via the Earthwatch website. All money raised from the campaign will support Earthwatch’s work bringing nature back into cities.

Why Champion a Tree?

Over six million people in the UK don’t have easy access to green space. By giving space to wildlife in our towns, we can give everyone access to nature and ignite passion for it. As the cost of living crisis continues, creating green space for those most affected will help improve mental health. By championing a tree, you can help Earthwatch create 500 Tiny Forests in towns and cities by 2030, benefiting wildlife and individuals across the UK.

What is Tiny Forest?

The 2023 State of Nature Report highlights the rapid decline in wildlife and the ways in which organisations such as Tiny Forest are combatting it. Tiny Forests are compact, fast- growing urban forests – 600 trees are planted in a space the size of a tennis court using a method pioneered by Japanese botanist Dr Akira Miyawaki. They are planted and cared for by their local community, coordinated by volunteer Tree Keepers. Plantings are planned across London in the coming months and each year volunteers monitor biodiversity and carbon storage across the Tiny Forest network.
