Visiting Europe’s first cat cafe in Vienna

Discover Animals’ videographer Geoff Moore recently visited Vienna to check out Europe’s first dedicated cat cafe, which opened in 2012.

Just a stone’s throw away from the city’s busy shopping area in Blumenstockgasse, Cafe Neko provides a haven for the resident cats, with customers buying food and drink from vending machines and then enjoying time relaxing at tables surrounded by their feline friends, who are rescues from local shelters.

The owner is Takako Ishimitsu, originally from Nagoya in Japan, who has lived in Vienna for some 20 years and wanted to bring the traditional Japenese cat cafe idea to Europe – Neko means cat in Japanese.

The cat cafe includes aerial challenges for the animals along with cosy corners for them to hide away if they want some peace and quiet of their own!
