Visitors to Warwick Castle will soon be able to see eight-month old fish eagle chicks, born last year at a breeding centre in Scotland, as they star in the Flight of the Eagles Show at the castle’s Birds of Prey Arena.
Named Albert and Victoria, after Prince Albert and Queen Victoria who visited Warwick Castle some 158 years ago, the fish eagle pair will be regularly seen soaring over the castle’s towers and ramparts as they make their debut during the Easter holidays.
Fully grown, fish eagle females can weigh as much as eight pounds with a wingspan of eight foot, while males tend to be slightly smaller, weighing up to five-and-a-half pounds.
The national bird of Zimbabwe, fish eagles can catch their own body weight in fish as well as other large birds, including flamingos. Efficient hunters, they only need to fly up to seven minutes of each day to catch the food they need.
