In this short film, Discover Animals’ Geoff Moore meets Lauren Chubb, who has brought two aspects of her life together and recently opened a cat cafe in the South West.
Brought up in a family catering company, Lauren wanted for a long time to open her own establishment while combining her love of cats and she felt that the nearby town of Dorchester in Dorset would be a great choice.
She spent a number of months trying to find an ideal place to rent in a good shopping area and when she saw the place in Antelope Walk in the town she felt it was just right place in terms of its size and facilities.
Her cats were from a farm that were living fairly wild in a barn and they have now formed a trio of furry friends for the customers to interact with. At around 16 weeks old, they have settled into their surroundings and they have been an absolute hit with her customers.
When she first started, Lauren booked customers in using a notebook. However, the response has been almost overwhelming and she has had to obtain a fully computerised booking system to deal with the interest!
There are rules of course. Like not picking up the cats, or bringing in cat food or treats. Â They must be left to do what they want.
With around nine different tables and various time slots, the computer has made things a great deal easier to manage.
The large window in the arcade is a popular place for passing shoppers to stop and see the kittens running around or playing during opening times and even after closing too.
Lauren says: “I never thought it would take off in the way that it has. I expected it would be of interest to shoppers in the town yet these little furry bundles have certainly gone down well. I am very happy to see this success so early with the business.”
