Meet Sacha Dench, the human swan!

In this short film, Discover Animals’ Geoff Moore meets Sacha Dench, sometimes known as the human swan, although she could just as easily be described as the human osprey or vulture!

Sacha’s latest project on vultures follows on from tracing the flight routes of Bewick swans from Northern Russia and ospreys from Scotland to Africa.

The organisation which Sacha is part of – Conservation Without Borders –  is planning research on why vultures are diminishing so rapidly around the world; they are currently the most persecuted bird.

The project has been boosted by some large corporate sponsors and assisted by world experts on vultures as well as familiar names from the world of show business such as Joanna Lumley lending their support.

Sacha herself has an amazing story to tell about growing up in Australia and later her desire to experience flight with these different migrating species. Whilst flying with them, she has tried to understand the long journeys they undertake and the problems they encounter, not only in nature but also from industrialisation and humans in general.

She even survived a flight accident in Scotland in which her body was literally shattered and she lost a colleague. However, she has not been deterred from pushing on with ‘Flight of The Vultures’ as her latest project, which progresses to the next stage later in the year. Still living with the aftermath of the accident, she now uses a high tech exoskeleton to support her badly injured legs, never letting anything get in her way.

Sacha is as enthusiastic as ever, her passion for the environment come across in everything she does and she is certainly an inspiration to others.
