In this short film, Discover Animals’ Geoff Moore visits West Cornwall to find out more about a water vole reintroduction project initiated by Kernow Conservation and funded by Mossy Earth, which works to restore wild ecosystems, support wildlife and biodiversity, and help fight climate change.
One hundred and forty have be reintroduced and habitat restored so that lake vegetation can regrow in order to feed the animals.
American mink are the water voles biggest threat after being released from mink farms in the 1960s and 1970s, and are one of the reasons water voles originally became extinct in the area. The team monitors the mink population through rafts, which contain clay to capture the mink footprints and identify where they are.
Volunteer days are held most Saturdays where you can enjoy a tour of the lake and help out, although sightings of the water voles are very rare, as they are extremely elusive!
