Discover Animals’ videographer Geoff Moore visits the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, on the southern tip of Spain, to discover more about the fascinating wildlife found on this rocky outpost.
As well as the famous Barbary macaques that roam wild on the Rock of Gibraltar – the only place in Europe where you can see this – there are between 200 and 300 resident dolphins in the Bay of Gibraltar, which visitors can see on a dolphin boat safari. There are three types of dolphin in Gibraltar – bottle-nosed, striped and common – that swim around 35 wrecks that were intentionally sunk to form artificial reefs alongside those found naturally in the ocean.
Geoff speaks to veterinary surgeon Mark Pizarro, who helps look after the 7 or 8 packs of Barbary macaques numbering about 200 in total, finding out how his team supplements the animals’ natural foraging habits, treats any illnesses and encourages visitors to respect the monkeys as wild animals, observing their natural behaviours from a distance.
