Durrell Wildlife Park

Durrell Wildlife Park, Trinity, Jersey

On the Channel Island of Jersey, the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust was founded by author and naturalist Gerald Durrell in 1963. Durrell was at the forefront of introducing the role of conservation to zoos in the UK.

The trust runs Durrell Wildlife Park, field programmes and a Conservation Academy aiming to stop declines of threatened species in the short term and to build the necessary skills and capacity to recover species and habitats in the long term. A Durrell Index measures progress and results.

You can see much of this conservation in action within the park, including Andean or Spectacled Bears. The Andean bears at Durrell contribute to a breeding programme to safeguard the species from extinction.
