Living Coasts in Torquay, run by the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, is the best in Europe for breeding a number of key species including African penguins, blue spotted stingrays and Inca terns, for which the attraction manages the European studbook (advising other zoos on husbandry techniques, arranging moves between zoos and giving guidance on breeding).
The highlights of a visit must be walking with the free-ranging penguins, but there’s also the fascinating aquarium species – and the water-side cafe.
Opened in 2003, this coastal zoo also houses wading birds, puffins and fur seals, along with an underground mangrove forest.
The attraction campaigns on local marine conservation issues and supports work with penguins and bank cormorants in southern Africa, as well as being part of several breeding programmes for endangered species.
Living Coasts offers a number of special experiences, including the unique chance to dive with penguins. You can also do a penguin feed or an aquarium feed, an aquarist experience, keeper experience or junior keeper experience.
The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust also owns Paignton Zoo Environmental Park in Devon and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall.
