Improving children’s nature knowledge through play

Two Norfolk-based businesses have joined forces to improve children’s nature knowledge through exploration and play.

Pensthorpe, the 700-acre nature reserve that is one of the most biodiverse in England, and Wymondham-based international toy manufacturer Orchard Toys have created two trails for Pensthorpe’s summer event, Beasts and Beaks, which runs until 5th September, so you still have time to visit.

Through bespoke activity booklets, The Mammoth Maths Hunt and Creature Hunt encourage children to put their detective hats on to decode some mystery words and discover facts about wildlife and improve their nature knowledge – all whilst playing in WildRootz, the eco award-winning play area.

Natalie Douglas, head of marketing at Pensthorpe, said: “At Pensthorpe, we love to encourage children’s natural sense of exploration and educate them about wildlife in a fun, gentle and informative way. Working with internationally recognised Orchard Toys and creating a unique partnership between two like-minded businesses who prioritise children’s learning has been a fantastic milestone in our year so far.”

As part of the collaboration, Orchard Toys is donating dozens of Woodland Bingo prizes, one for every day of the summer holidays, which visitors can win via the competition boxes upon completion of the trail.

With more family-friendly events scheduled for the rest of the year including Halloween and Christmas, Pensthorpe and Orchard Toys hope to extend the partnership in future, bringing more opportunities to explorers and budding nature enthusiasts.

“One of the great things about working with Orchard Toys is the creativity of its team. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the development process for The Mammoth Maths Hunt and Creature Hunt that helps instil nature and conservation knowledge in the younger generations through puzzles, literacy and numeracy,” added Natalie.

Ali Brown, marketing manager at Orchard Toys, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Pensthorpe. It has…so much on offer for families and young children. It’s great to be able to enhance that experience with our collaboration through the delivery of an Orchard Toys trail throughout the WildRootz area.”

Adult tickets to Pensthorpe are £13.95, children’s tickets (aged 3-16) are £12.95 and under 3s go free. For the summer holidays only, every paying guest will receive 50% of a return visit between 18th July and 5th September.
