In this film, Discover Animals’ Geoff Moore visits the Hawk Conservancy Trust in Hampshire to find out more about the attraction.
The charity aims to help conserve birds of prey and the jewel in their crown is the daily flying displays. These take place in environments such as a recreation of an African savannah and a wild flower meadow with birds including kites, vultures, falcons and owls.
Children’s Owl, Young Falconer and Photographic Experiences allow people to get up close to the birds and learn more about them.
Overseas, the charity works mainly with vultures, helping their survival from threats such as poisoning – the vulture is currently the most threatened species of bird in the world. Poachers targeting elephant tusks will poison the carcasses that vultures feed on to stop the birds alerting authorities to illegal activity by circling above in the sky.
Onsite, the National Bird of Prey Hospital takes in injured and orphaned birds of prey here in the UK, where they are treated and rehabilitated back into the wild.
Our thanks to Test Valley council for their assistance with Geoff’s trip and the Gray Manor Hotel for hosting him – graymanorhotel.co.uk.
