Polar bears depend on Arctic sea ice to hunt and raise their young, but the ice is shrinking and polar bear numbers are in decline.

Polar bears face a number of threats, with loss of ice due to climate change the single greatest cause of damage to their habitat, with the ice having declined by 40% in the last 30 years. Toxic chemicals and pollution in the marine environment, as well as to human-bear conflict, also  contribute to the plight of the polar bear.

By working to help cut global greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the switch to renewable energy we could minimise the warming that’s melting the polar bear’s habitat.

WWF fund research that aims to further our knowledge and understanding of polar bear populations, and how they could respond to changes in their environment.
