The zoo near Winchester opened in 1972, with conservation very much at its heart. It is set within the environs of Marwell Hall, which was built in the early 14th century (around 1320) by Walter Woodlock, a relative of the Bishop of Winchester and subsequently owned by the Seymour family.
Now extinct in the world, they are bred in captivity in reserves in Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal. Distinguished for their spiral-horned antelopes, white coat, red-brown chest and black markings.
Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire was the brainchild of John Heyworth, who in 1969, transformed the overgrown Bradwell Grove Estate into a wildlife park, which has seen over 12 million visitors since it officially opened in 1970.
