A seal pup hand-reared by zoo keepers has been reunited with her mother for the New Year. Gemini, a South American fur seal at Living Coasts in Torquay, was born on the morning of Tuesday 3rd June to mother Grace. She had to be hand-reared because Grace was unable to produce milk. Now, staff have weaned her and introduced her to the adult seals, including her mother.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the world’s most comprehensive inventory of endangered species, but it’s hardly the time for celebration. Of the 76,199 assessed species, 22,413 are threatened with extinction, according to the most recent update of the IUCN Red List. 310 species were added to its list of vanishing wildlife, including the Pacific Bluefin Tuna, the Chinese Pufferfish and the Black Grass-dart Butterfly.
